High school basketball roundup: Schedule set for Jay Sparks Classic

The third annual Jay Sparks Classic will be held Friday and Saturday at the Lumpkin Center.

The annual event is to honor Columbus State athletic director Jay Sparks, who began the women's basketball program at CSU.

Northside High coach Candace Turner played for Sparks and is the organizer of the event, which brings together four girls basketball teams in for two games on Friday and two on Saturday.

The classic tips off at 6 p.m. Friday with Northside playing East Coweta. It will be followed by Carver vs. Carver-Montgomery at 8.

On Saturday at noon, Northside will play Carver-Montgomery, followed by Carver vs. East Coweta at 2 p.m.


Four local high school boys basketball teams will take part in the first Sandy Creek Shootout on Saturday.

Northside will play Fayette County at 2 p.m., followed by Carver vs. Jonesboro at 3:30 p.m.

At 5 p.m., Columbus will play Tri-Cities and Hardaway plays Sandy Creek at 6:30 p.m.

Sandy Creek is located in Tyrone, Ga.
