A firefighter douses flames burning through the roof of 817 Third Ave.

Columbus firefighters this afternoon extinguished a blaze that burned through the roof at 817 Third Ave.

A neighbor said the rental property was vacant, as two women in the military who lived there had just moved out.

Firefighters found the home in flames about 2:40 p.m., said Battalion Chief Keith Watson of the Columbus Department of Fire and Emergency Medical Services.

Watson said firefighters had the blaze under control in about 10 minutes.

No damage estimate or cause of the fire was available. The fire remains under investigation.

Traffic on Third Avenue between Ninth and Eighth streets was diverted temporarily while firefighters battled the blaze.

A neighbor said lights had been left on in the house overnight, though no one was living there.
