Columbus State 66, West Georgia 65: Lady Cougars win in overtime

CARROLLTON, Ga. -- The Columbus State Lady Cougars basketball team defeated West Georgia 66-65 Saturday, but it took a single overtime period for CSU to notch the win.

Columbus State picked up an 8-2 lead after the first five minutes of the game. With 7:03 left in the first half West Georgia had battled back to narrow CSU's lead to 19-18.

The Lady Cougars ended the first half on a 15-7 run, taking a 34-25 lead into the break.

At the 10:24 mark of the second half West Georgia took its first lead of the contest at 44-43. There were five lead changes through the end of the second half, and West Georgia made a three-pointer with nine seconds left in regulation to tie the game at 57-57, forcing overtime.

After the first minute of overtime had gone by the Lady Wolves had amassed a 4-point lead at 61-57, but Columbus State battled back to tie the game at 61 all.

West Georgia got out to another 4-point lead at 65-61 with just 31 seconds left in overtime, but a layup by Chatil Bradford with 15 seconds left cut the deficit to 65-63.

Bradford then made a steal and hit a game-winning trey with seven seconds left.

Bradford went 13-20 from the field and hit 3-4 from behind the arc. She totaled 35 points, eight rebounds, a steal and three blocks.

Carrie Washington had 13 points, 14 rebounds, four steals and one block, Asha Alexander totaled eight points, 14 rebounds, three assists, and one steal, and Tae Smith and Britteny Tatum both tallied two points.

CSU (3-0) will play Fort Valley Saturday at 2 p.m. in the Peach Belt/SIAC Challenge in Americus, Ga.
