University Park, PA (SportsNetwork.com) - Led by 19 points and seven assists from Tim Frazier, the Penn State Nittany Lions took down the Monmouth Hawks, 84-52, as part of the Barclays Classic at the Bryce Jordan Center.
For the Nittany Lions (5-1), Allen Roberts added 17 points, D.J. Newbill finished with 15 points and nine rebounds and Ross Travis chipped in with 11 points. Penn State, victorious in four straight, moves on to play St. John's in the next round of the tournament on Friday night.
Josh James was the lone scorer in double figures with 12 points for the Hawks (1-4).
Penn State connected on 50 percent of its shots from the field in first half, while holding Monmouth to just 38.5 percent shooting, as the Nittany Lions took a 40-30 advantage into halftime.
The Nittany Lions was even sharper in the second half, dropping in 57.7 percent of their field goal tries. The Hawks continued to struggle from the field, shooting just 31.6 percent. Penn State turned up the pressure in the half, outrebounded Monmouth 18-8 and forcing 11 turnovers, the lead ballooning to 38 points, as the Lions cruised to the easy victory.
The Nittany Lions finished the contest with a 35-21 advantage on the boards. Penn State also outscored Monmouth on the fast break, 15-4.
