A Upatoi man, accused of hitting a Columbus man in the head with a stool and stomping him on the ground, was charged with aggravated assault Saturday.
Warren Paschal Jr., 71, was taken into custody after the alleged assault in front of the Boulevard Package Store at Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard and Shepherd Drive. He was held in the Muscogee County Jail for a 9 a.m. hearing Monday in Recorders Court, officials said.
Police Capt. William Turner said the 54-year-old victim was transported to Midtown Medical Center after the 12:45 p.m. dispute.
Turner was driving through the area when he saw the victim on the ground and helped capture the suspect. He hit him in the head with that stool, Turner said pointing to a wooden-type spool on the ground. He stomped him.
Eddie Marshall, a witness to the attack, said the man carrying a blue bag had been confronting people earlier in the small shopping center. In fact, he started with me first, Marshall said. He had that blue bag and said I will kill you right now. Ive got my knife and my gun in the bag right here.
Marshall said the victim just got out of the hospital and was frail. The man doesnt weight 80 pounds, he said.
