Arts Round-up: 'A Christmas Carol,' 'Tuna Christmas' and more

This is the time of year when you can check out the annual theater holiday offerings around town.

"A Christmas Carol"

Charles Dickens' "A Christmas Carol" gets a new musical adaptation by Springer Opera House's producing artistic director Paul Pierce and retired Columbus State University music professor Paul Vander Gheynst. It can be seen at 7:30 tonight-Saturday and 2:30 p.m. Sunday; also, 7:30 p.m. Dec. 19-21 and 2:30 p.m. Dec. 22 at the Springer, 103 10th St. Tickets are $40; $34 for seniors and public service personnel; $17 for children and students. Pre-show dinners are available at 6 p.m. Saturday; also, 6 p.m. Dec. 19-21; must be reserved 48 hours in advance for $18. Call 706-327-3688.

"A Tuna Christmas"

For the 12th year, Paul Pierce and Springer Theater Academy director and associate artistic director Ron Anderson star in the holiday cult classic about the Christmas goings-on in the third smallest town in Texas in "A Tuna Christmas." It can be seen at 7:30 tonight-Saturday and 2:30 p.m. Sunday; also, 7:30 p.m. Dec. 19-21 and Dec. 23-24; 2:30 p.m. Dec. 22 in the McClure Theatre, Springer Opera House, 1022 First Ave. Tickets are $37; $32 for seniors and public service personnel; $17 for children and students. Friday Jazz at the Loft

Friday Jazz at the Loft is 7-9 p.m. All ages are welcome at 1032 Broadway. Friday's featured band is the Ian Cooper Quartet (Ian Cooper, saxophone; David Baker, bass; Sam Creswell, guitar; Trey Byars, drums) It's free. Call 706-596-8141.

"Black Nativity"

The final performances of Langston Hughes "Black Nativity" can be seen at the Liberty Theatre, 821 Eighth Ave. this weekend. It's a gospel musical that celebrates Christ's birth and can be seen at 8 p.m. Friday-Saturday and 4 p.m. Sunday in the Liberty Theatre, 821 Eighth Ave. Tickets are $15 in advance; $20 at the door. "Message of the Season -- Music of the Masters"

Cantus Columbus, the only professional chorus in town, presents its annual "Message of the Season -- Music of the Masters" at 7:30 p.m. Monday in Legacy Hall, RiverCenter for the Performing Arts, 900 Broadway. Tickets are $29-$33. This concert normally sells out, so we recommend buying tickets in advance. Call 706-256-3612.
