Chestnut Hill, MA (SportsNetwork.com) - Dez Wells netted a career-high 33 points to lead the Maryland Terrapins to an 88-80 win over the Boston College Eagles in the ACC opener for both teams.
Wells shot 12-of-18 from the floor and carried the Terrapins (6-4, 1-0 ACC) late, scoring 18 points in the final 6:56 of the tilt.
Roddy Peters and Jake Layman dropped 13 and 12 points, respectively, and Nick Faust deposited 11 in the triumph.
Olivier Hanlan filled it up with 26 points and eight assists for Boston College (3-7, 0-1), which lost its third straight contest. Garland Owens had a career-best 16 points off the bench, and Ryan Anderson went for 14 points and eight rebounds on 6-of-8 from the field.
Hanlan's jumper had the hosts in front 64-60 with seven minutes to play when Wells took over. The Xavier transfer went on a personal 5-0 run to put the Terps in front and provided a cushion with his transition layup before the final media timeout.
Wells' layup with 45 ticks remaining put Maryland in front by six and Peters' three-point play following a Hanlan turnover put the game away.
