GAME NOTES: The Sacramento State Hornets again shoot for back-to-back wins for the first time this season, as they clash with the Titans of Cal State Fullerton in non-conference play at Titan Gym.
The Hornets have won a total of just three games this season, and have yet to put together any consistent efforts from one game to the next. The team last took the floor a week ago against William Jessup and recorded a convincing 85-54 home win in order to stop a two-game slide.
As for the Titans, they too are seeking their first win streak of any kind this season, having spread out four victories over the course of 11 games. Fullerton matched up against Texas Southern last weekend at home and captured an 87-80 win, the second in the last three outings for the program as it moved closer to .500 at Titan Gym.
The Hornets lead the all-time series by a count of 6-5. The most recent matchup took place more than a decade ago with Sacramento State posting a 78-71 overtime victory on the road.
Shooting 62.5 percent from the field in the first half, while limiting William Jessup to just 28.0 percent, the Hornets had their last game sewn up by halftime as they led 50-28. Eventually Sacramento State made good on 59.3 percent from the floor, including 8-of-16 behind the 3-point line in the lopsided victory. Alex Tiffin led the way with 21 points and nine rebounds, followed by Mikh McKinney who dropped in 14 points and handed out five assists before heading to the bench.
With the game against William Jessup well in hand, the Hornets tried to spread the wealth and give the regulars a breather, which is why there were just two double-digit scorers in the outing. Still, McKinney heads the list of scoring overall on the season for the team with 14.7 ppg, handing out a team-best 25 assists along the way. Dylan Garrity checks in with 12.0 ppg as he pairs with McKinney to account for 29 of the unit's 46 3-point baskets through seven games.
Michael Williams knocked down a quartet of 3-pointers n the second half of the meeting with Texas Southern as he helped the Titans build a double-digit lead and eventually claim the seven-point home win. Williams finished with 24 points and four assists, while Alex Harris chipped in with 21 points and Joe Boyd another 10, the latter hitting all five of his field goal chances in just 16 minutes of action for a team that finished with 54.4 percent accuracy from the floor overall.
As one of two players to have started every game for the Titans, it only makes sense that Williams leads the team in scoring with 15.5 ppg, although he could stand to make some better shot selections from time to time. Harris is responsible for another 13.3 ppg, although he has appeared in just seven games and is connecting on 25.7 percent behind the 3-point line. As a team, Fullerton is just 31.3 percent accurate beyond the arc.
Both of these teams need to get their act together with conference play just around the corner. While they each are coming off wins, the victory for the Hornets was rather hollow given the competition, which is another way of saying they shouldn't get their hopes up this weekend.
