A two-vehicle collision on Buena Vista Road early Saturday has left a Columbus woman dead and a man charged with first degree homicide by vehicle in her death, authorities said.

Shavonna Johnson, a 26-year-old resident of Willow Bend Run, was pronounced dead of blunt force trauma to her torso while undergoing surgery at Midtown Medical Center, said Muscogee County Coroner Buddy Bryan. No autopsy will be performed in the 8:18 a.m. death because she was in emergency surgery at the hospital.

Police have charged Chris Turner II, 23, in connection with her death. He also faces one count each of reckless driving, obstruction of a law enforcement officer, giving false information to an officer, driving with a suspended or revoked license, driving under the influence and five counts of disorderly conduct. He is being held without bond in the Muscogee County Jail for a 9 a.m. Monday hearing in Recorder’s Court.

In a preliminary report of the accident, Bryan said the woman was an unbuckled passenger in the westbound vehicle when it collided with another vehicle driven by Turner at 3:44 a.m. She was ejected from the vehicle.

Bryan said Johnson was going to get something to eat before the crash near Linden Drive.

The accident remains under investigation by the Columbus Police Department. No other details were available late Saturday.
