A 10-year-old Beauregard boy died Monday when a gun discharged while he and two other juveniles were handling the weapon in a home on Highway 51 south of Opelika, Ala., the Lee County coroner said.

The name of the victim was withheld along with the other two juveniles. Lee County Coroner Bill Harris said the boy was pronounced dead of a gunshot wound at the scene about 7:40 p.m.

The victim’s body will be sent to the Alabama Department of Forensic Sciences in Montgomery for a post mortem examination.

“It appears that the victim and two other juveniles were handling a weapon when it discharged, striking the 10-year-old victim,” Harris said in a statement. “He was killed instantly.”

The death is being treated as an accident, the coroner said.

An investigation continues by the Lee County Sheriff’s Office, Lee County Coroner’s Office and the Alabama Department of Forensic Sciences.
