Wrestling teams around the area will compete in their respective area duals this weekend with a chance to advance to the Georgia High School Association state competition.

Only one area will be playing in town, as Hardaway is set to host the Area 1-AAAAA competition at 5 p.m. Friday. Area 1-AAAAA is comprised of Bainbridge, Hardaway, Harris County, Lee County, Northside and Thomas County Central.

Those teams will compete in six dual matches with the top four finishers advancing to state, seeded in the order of their finish.

The other area tournaments will take place on the road.

Area 2-A will compete at Eagle’s Landing Christian Academy at 9 a.m. Saturday. That area is comprised of Brookstone, Challenge Charter, Dooly County, Eagle’s Landing Christian, First Presbyterian Day, Georgia Academy of the Blind, Georgia Military Academy, Landmark Christian, Mitchell County, Pacelli and Strong Rock.

Area 2-AA will compete at Monticello High on Friday and Saturday. Bowdon, Bremen, Chattahoochee County, Crawford County, Heard County, Jordan, Kendrick, Lamar County, Macon County, Monticello, Northeast-Macon, Pelham, Spencer and Temple are all in Area 2-AA.

Top contenders in the area include Bremen, Monticello and Spencer, all ranked in the top 10 at Nos. 2, 6 and 7, respectively.

Carver will compete at the Area 2-AAA tournament at Adairsville High on Friday and Saturday. Wrestling will begin at 3:30 p.m. Friday and 10 a.m. Saturday. Top seeds beginning the tournament are Adairsville, Sonoraville, Rockmart, Cartersville and Ringgold. Carver’s first match will come against Rockmart. The top two teams will qualify for the state duals.

Area 5-AAAA, comprised of Alexander, Carrollton, Columbus, Fayette County, LaGrange, Sandy Creek, Shaw and Troup, will compete at Alexander High.

Duals tournaments are different from traditional wrestling tournaments in that the former is team-based rather than individual. Teams will face off in a bracket-style tournament, going through each weight class and accumulating points with pins and decisions.

The state duals will be held on Jan. 9-11 at the Macon Centreplex in Macon, Ga.
