Two area teams head to GHSA state wrestling duals

Two area wrestling teams will take part in the Georgia High School Association state duals tournament, beginning on Thursday at the Macon Centreplex in Macon, Ga.

Northside High and Spencer High clinched berths to the state tournament with their performances in the area duals a week ago. Both finished in second in their respective tournaments.

The Patriots defeated Hardaway to earn a split in its two matches and finish in second out of three teams behind Lee County. Only two teams advanced to state from Area 1-AAAAA.

Spencer defeated Northeast Macon 61-18 and Monticello 34-33. The Greenwave came up short against Bremen in the finals. It is the fifth time in six years that Spencer has advanced to state.

Northside’s will be its first trip under head coach Matt Redmond.

“We’re pretty stoked right now,” Redmond said after his team’s finish last week. “It’s one of those things where we’ve been putting in a lot of work, drilling a lot of the same technique over and over again. One of our kids figured out that we did 9,000 single-leg takedowns last year, and we’re on that same track right now. It’s a matter of laying a foundation and building on top of that. … Thankfully it’s paid off.”

Redmond added that he thought the experience would be a major factor in motivating his team during the second half of the season.

“It’s going to fire us up going into the latter part of the season,” he said. “It’s such a great atmosphere. It’s one of those things where you can see it in the wrestlers the next week, in their motivation. It kind of fills your sails a little bit. I can explain it to them all day long, but when they’re in the actual arena, it sinks in.”

The tournament will be held over the course of three days, Thursday-Saturday. If it won its first-round match, Northside would get the winner of Warner Robins-Allatoona in the second. Spencer’s potential second-round opponent would likely offer the stiffest of challenges, as it shares a bracket with Jefferson, which has won 12 straight duals state championships (every year the duals have been held).
