Abbott sets national record in men's short program

Boston, MA (SportsNetwork.com) - Three-time national champion Jeremy Abbott set a U.S. record for points in the men's short program Friday night at the U.S. Figure Skating Championships.

Abbott, who is looking to reach his second Olympics, posted a score of 99.86 points, breaking his own record of 90.23, and he currently has a lead of 7.82 points over Richard Dornbush.

Jason Brown placed third with a score of 87.47, while Max Aaron finished fourth with a score of 86.95.

The top two finishers will head to Sochi, Russia next month to compete in the Olympics. Abbott finished ninth at Vancouver in 2010, while compatriot Evan Lysacek won gold.
