Recap: East Carolina vs. Old Dominion

Greenville, NC (SportsNetwork.com) - Led by 23 points from Keenan Palmore, the Old Dominion Monarchs downed the East Carolina Pirates 81-70 in the Conference-USA opener for both clubs at Minges Coliseum.

For the Monarchs (7-9, 1-0 C-USA), Aaron Bacote added 18 points and six assists and Dimitri Batten chipped in with 12 points.

Paris Campbell led the Pirates (11-5, 0-1) with 21 points, Akeem Richmond added 14 points, Petar Torlak finished with 12 points and Michael Zangari scored 11.

ODU shot very well to open the game, hitting on 51.7 percent of its field goal tries, including 4-of-11 from 3-point range in the first period. ECU made 45.8 percent of its shots from the field, also going 4-of-11 from deep. The Pirates outscored the Monarchs 11-3 at the free-throw line to counter their shooting discrepancy allowing the teams to go into halftime knotted at 37-37.

After intermission, the Monarchs stayed hot, connecting on 61.5 percent of their field goal tries. The Pirates struggled from the floor, making only 35.5 percent of their shots. ODU used a 12-2 run early in the second half to build a double-digit lead and the Pirates would get no closer than six the rest of the way as the Monarchs cruised to victory, their first as a member of Conference USA.

ODU dominated the frontcourt, outscoring ECU in the paint 50-24 and outrebounding it, 36-29. The Monarchs also finished with a 30-15 scoring advantage from beyond the arc.
