Omaha, NE (SportsNetwork.com) - Doug McDermott notched a game-high 35 points to lead the Creighton Bluejays past the Xavier Musketeers, 95-89, at the CenturyLink Center in a Big East Conference matchup.
McDermott shot 13-of-24 from the field for the Bluejays (14-2, 4-0 Big East), who extended their winning streak to nine games. Ethan Wragge (15 points), Devin Brooks (14), Austin Chatman (12) and Jahenns Manigat (11) all reached double figures.
Semaj Christon netted 27 points to lead the Musketeers (13-4, 3-1), who had their eight-game winning streak snapped. Matt Stainbrook logged a double- double with 15 points and 11 rebounds. Justin Martin and Dee Davis contributed 21 and 14 points, respectively.
The Musketeers shot 43.3 percent from the field in the first half, just slightly less efficient than the Bluejays' 51.9 percent, which took Creighton out to a 39-25 lead at halftime.
In the second half, the Bluejays' 57.1 field goal percentage was again just slightly higher than the Musketeers' 54.3, but Creighton also helped itself with 17-of-24 at the free-throw line. With 29 seconds left, a Myles Davis 3- pointer got the Musketeers within three, but this was as close as they got in the final minute, as the Bluejays were able to close the game out at the line.
Xavier squandered a 13-point lead, which it held midway through the first half. The Musketeers also struggled at the charity stripe, knocking down just 13-of-22.
