CSU puts game away earlyin first half

The Columbus State women's basketball team cruised to a 78-55 rout of UNC Pembroke on Sunday afternoon at the Lumpkin Center.

The game was never in doubt from the earliest minutes as the Lady Cougars (9-3, 4-2 Peach Belt Conference) led by 10, 14-4, just 3:37 into the game.

CSU led by as many as 21 points in the first half. Tae Smith, who had all 10 of her points in the opening half, hit a pair of free throws to give CSU the 34-13 lead.

Dee Dee Deshazer hit the third of her 3-pooiinters in the first half with 7 seconds remaining as CSU took a 50-31 lead into intermission.

Asha Alexander scored 12 of her 14 points in the first half.

CSU shot 51.4 percent (19 of 37) from the floor and 43.8 percent (7 of 16) from beyond the 3-point arc in the first half.

The Lady Cougars kept pouring it on in the second half, scoring the first 11 points to take a 61-31 lead. That would be CSU's biggest lead in the game.

Deshazer finished with a career-high 14 points, tying Alexander for team-high honors.

Chatil Bradford scored 11.

Carrie Washington led CSU

in rebounding with eight.

Kamille Horne led Pembroke (5-8, 1-5) with 14 points.

CSU is tied with Georgia College for third place in the Western Division, a half-game behind Young Harris (4-1) and 1½ games behind North Georgia (5-0).

The Lady Cougars play at Young Harris on Wednesday at 5:30 p.m. Columbus State will return to the Lumpkin Center on Saturday to host PBC foe Armstrong Atlantic at 1:30 p.m.
