CSU 87, Pembroke 79: Cougars overcome late-game mistake, beat Pembroke in OT

FROM STAFF REPORTSJanuary 12, 2014

The Columbus State men's basketball team overcame a late-game mental mistake to beat UNC Pembroke 87-79 in overtime on Sunday afternoon at the Lumpkin Center.

Shane Heyward made a layup with 0.7 seconds left in regulation that gave CSU a 2-point lead and most likely the victory. But Kenney Funderburke came off the bench and onto the floor in celebration, drawing a technical foul.

Griffin Pittman hit two free throws for Pembroke to send the game into overtime.

In the extra period, CSU scored 9 of the final 11 points to pull away for the victory, which snapped a three-game losing streak.

"I'm just proud of the guys for fighting tonight," CSU coach Robert Moore said. "It would have been easy for us to give up after losing three straight and then that technical foul but I thought we played some of our best ball in overtime today."

CSU (8-5, 2-4 Peach Belt Conference) led 67-61 with 3:46 left, but the Braves tied the game at 67. Pembroke (11-5, 2-4) tied it again at 72 on a Pittman basket with 10 seconds left.

BJ Battle scored 18 points to lead CSU. He was one of four to score in double figures. Heyward scored a season-high 17, 13 of of which came in the second half or overtime.

R.J. Sessions and Jermaine Morgan scored 13 and 11 points, respectively.

Quamain Rose scored 22 points for Pembroke.

CSU is tied for fifth place in the Western Division with Georgia College, one-half game behind North Georgia (2-3). Georgia Southwestern leads the division at 4-1, followed by Montevallo at 4-2 and Young Harris at 3-2.
