Pullman, WA (SportsNetwork.com) - Que Johnson scored 14 points and hit 10- of-13 from the free-throw line as the Washington State Cougars held on for a 49-46 victory over the Utah Utes in Pac-12 play at Beasley Coliseum.
Dexter Kernich-Drew netted 11 points on 5-of-6 shooting for the Cougars (8-8, 1-3 Pac-12), who won their first conference game. D.J. Shelton contributed eight points and grabbed a team-high nine rebounds in the win. The victory snaps a three-game Cougars losing streak.
Jordan Loveridge scored 15 points on 3-of-11 shooting for Utah (12-4, 1-3) on 7-of-10 from the free-throw line, adding five rebounds. Delon Wright chipped in 14 points and pulled down seven rebounds in the low-scoring contest. Utah has lost two in a row and three of its last four games.
Washington State shot just 30.4 percent from the floor in the first half, as the Cougars trailed the Utes at halftime, 24-19. Utah hit 37.5 percent of its shots in the half.
The second frame was not good to the Utes, who went 4-of-20 from the floor (20 percent), including 0-of-9 from 3-point range. The Cougars bounced back to shoot 47.1 percent from the floor and outscore the Utes 30-22 in the half.
Utah held the advantage in points off turnovers, 12-6, but lost it in points off the bench, 14-6.
