A Phenix City man died Friday after he was stricken by cardiac arrest while driving on J.R. Allen Parkway at Gateway Road.

Muscogee County Coroner Buddy Bryan identified the man as John L. Johnson who was pronounced dead of natural causes at the scene at 5:30 p.m. No autopsy will be performed in his death.

Bryan said two witnesses said they were stopped at the red light at Gateway Road and J.R. Allen. They saw Johnson’s truck start rolling before the vehicle went down and embankment and no brake lights ever came on.

“The motor vehicle wreck didn’t cause his death,” the coroner said. “He had no marks.”

Johnson, 56, was wearing a seat belt.

Rush-hour traffic on the road was slowed until the wreckage was cleared. The accident is under investigation by the Columbus Police Department.
