Columbus State 75, Georgia Southwestern 62: Carrie Washington paces CSU in conference win

AMERICUS, Ga. -- Carrie Washington had 23 points and set a new single-game rebound record for the Columbus State Lady Cougars with 27 boards as she propelled her team to a 75-62 Peach Belt Conference win over Georgia Southwestern on Saturday.

Washington topped CSU's previous record of 23 rebounds in one game set by Phebe Smith against West Georgia in 2008.

The win puts CSU at 7-3 in the PBC and 12-4 overall.

Columbus State got out to a 19-16 lead with 9:02 remaining in the first half.

CSU's biggest lead of the half was only five points, and the Lady Cougars took a 33-29 lead into halftime.

Just over three minutes into the second half Georgia Southwestern narrowed the gap to one point at 36-35, and the two teams remained close for several minutes.

Washington hit a jump shot that gave CSU its biggest lead of the game at 61-55 with 4:53 remaining in the contest.

The Lady Cougars were able to hold of Georgia Southwestern and pick up the win.

Tae Smith tallied 22 points for the Lady Cougars, and Asha Alexander added nine points and a career-high six steals.

CSU will travel to face another conference opponent in North Georgia on Wednesday at 5:30 p.m.
