Georgia Southwestern 86, Columbus State 80: Georgia Southwestern withstands CSU rally

AMERICUS, Ga. -- Columbus State was down by 17 points in the second half in a Peach Belt Conference game against Georgia Southwestern Saturday. CSU was able to overcome the deficit and take a 77-75 lead late, but Georgia Southwestern regained control and finished on a run that gave it a 86-80 win over the Cougars.

At the 10:24 mark of the second half the Hurricanes had a 12-point lead. A few minutes later two 3-pointers by R.J. Sessions cut Georgia Southwestern's lead to 64-60.

Kenney Funderburk and Jahmad Saleem then combined to scored CSU's next 16 points, leaving the Cougars down only two at 72-70 with four minutes left.

The Hurricanes got back to a 75-70 lead, but Columbus State went on a 7-0 run to take the lead.

CSU took a 77-75 lead after a shot by Sessions, but Georgia Southwestern finished strong to come away with the win.

"I was proud that the guys fought back from being down earlier, especially on the road," coach Robert Moore said.

"It could have been easy for them to quit, but we played a really good second half."

Sahleem led CSU with 23 points. Funderburk tallied 22 points, and Sessions finished with 14.

DeAngelo Kirkland added 8 points, and Jermaine Morgan totaled 6.

The Cougars are now 10-7 overall and 4-6 in PBC play. The Cougars will travel to face conference foe North Georgia on Wednesday with a 7:30 p.m. tip.
