Georgia state troopers and motorists are reporting icy road conditions on Interstate 185 north of Hopewell Church Road in Harris County.

The exit is 30 miles north of Columbus.

A trooper with the patrol’s LaGrange post confirmed the hazardous driving conditions north of mile marker 35, but was unsure of additional details.

Columbus attorney Wade “Trip” Tomlinson, who this morning was en route to Atlanta to receive an award for his wife, Columbus Mayor Teresa Tomlinson, said he had to turn back because bridges had iced over and the temperature was dropping precipitously the farther north he went. His car’s external thermometer was recording 26 degrees when he turned back, he said.

He said he saw six to eight vehicles that had slid off the road, and a comparable number of law enforcement vehicles running their emergency lights to slow motorists down.

At that time – around 11:15 a.m. – sleet was raining and freezing, he said.

In Alabama, the DOT is reporting all southbound lanes are blocked near exit 58 (TigerTown) after a wreck. It isn't expected to be cleared until 1:30 p.m., according to their website.

With some form of precipitation forecast to fall throughout the day, drivers should be prepared for ice on vehicles and on the road.

They can keep track of road conditions and accidents on Georgia's highways and interstates with this map, administered by the state's Department of Transportation.
