Cirstea ousted in Pattaya QFs

Pattaya City, Thailand (SportsNetwork.com) - Third-seeded Sorana Cirstea was a quarterfinal upset victim Friday at the Pattaya Open.

Czech Karolina Pliskova upended the Romanian Cirstea in 1-6, 7-6 (7-3), 6-0 fashion on the hardcourts at Dusit Thani Hotel.

Two more Day 5 upsets occurred when German Julia Goerges took out fifth-seeded Russian Elena Vesnina 5-7, 6-3, 6-3 and Czech Andrea Hlavackova doused eighth- seeded Chinese Peng Shuai 6-2, 7-5.

The only player to avoid an upset on Friday was fourth-seeded Russian Ekaterina Makarova, who outlasted ageless 43-year-old Japanese Kimiko Date- Krumm 6-2, 4-6, 6-4.

Saturday's all-European semifinals in Pattaya City will pit Makarova against Hlavackova and Pliskova versus Goerges.

This week's champion will collect $43,000.
