The Columbus State Lady Cougars softball team opened up the 2014 season Saturday with a pair of wins at South Commons Park. CSU defeated Lynn 5-2 in the opener and downed Sainty Leo 2-1 in the nightcap.
In Game One the Lady Cougars scored a stream of steady runs in the middle innings. The first run came on a solo home run to center field by Suzanne Carney in the top of the third.
Nina Rubio hit an RBI single in the fourth inning, and Kodi Ricketson hit a two-RBI double to right field in the top of the fifth.
Morgan Staffins followed with a sac fly for an RBI in the sixth inning. Lynn's only two runs of the contest came in the bottom of the sixth, but CSU was able to prevent any further rally to pick up the win.
In Game Two things were much closer. Carney hit an RBI single in the top of the third inning, and that would remain the only score of the contest until Saint Leo tied the game at 1-1 in the bottom of the seventh.
The game needed one extra inning to decide, and Taylor Turner brought in Ricketson on a ground ball that gave CSU a 2-1 lead. The Lady Cougars held on in the bottom of the inning an notched win No. 2 of the new season.
The winning pitcher in Game One for Columbus State was Abby Green. She threw for five innings and gave up no runs on three hits with three strikeouts and four walks.
Turner was the winning pitcher in the nightcap. She pitched all eight innings and gave up one run on two hits with five strikeouts and two walks.
Columbus State (1-0) will host Saint Leo and Rollins today starting at 9 a.m.
