High School All-Star Indoor Classic kicks off today

kprice@ledger-enquirer.comFebruary 7, 2014

The fourth High School All-Star Indoor Classic kicks off tonight at 7 p.m. with a change from years past.

In the previous years, the rosters for the two teams were divided between Georgia and Alabama. The Georgia teams won handily each year -- 54-21 in 2009, 83-48 in 2010 and 46-13 in 2011. No games were held the past two years.

This year, the teams will be made up of players from Muscogee County for Team Red and players outside Muscogee County and players from Alabama for Team Blue.

The quarterbacks for Team Red are Jordan's William Harris and Spencer's Tarvaraska Davis.

The quarterbacks for Team Blue are LaGrange's Wynton Heard and Beulah's Trevon Brown.

"We always believed this was a great event, but due to circumstances we had to step back for two years and restructure the process," Columbus Lions coach Jason Gibsonb said. "The first change was to have both teams practice together in the arena vs. splitting them up and practicing outside. We thought this would get the players used to the field and walls and produce a better product. The next change was to have our staff coach the teams since they are more familiar with the arena game.

"We used to do Alabama vs. Georgia but based upon the number of nominations from both sides of the river it made sense to have Muscogee County (team red) vs. Non- Muscogee County Schools (team blue). So far through the practices we had, the players seem to like it that way and that is the most important part."
