Lady Cougars go 1-1 on second day of classic

The Lady Cougars softball team went 1-1 on the second day of the Cougar Classic. Columbus State rallied in the bottom of the seventh to beat Belmont Abbey 6-5 before falling to Wingate 5-4 in a later game.

Belmont Abbey took a 5-4 lead into the bottom of the last inning in Game 1, but Kristen Carr hit an RBI single and Casey Googe scored on an ensuing throwing error to give CSU the win.

Carr picked up the win on the mound for Columbus State. She pitched one inning and gave up no runs or hits with one strikeout.

In the second game both teams came out firing on all cylinders, leading to a 3-3 tie by the end of the first.

This score remained until Googe brought in a run on a bunt in the eighth inning, but Wingate rallied to score two runs in the bottom of the inning for the win.

Taylor Turner picked up the loss for CSU. She threw for 7 2-3 innings and gave up five runs on six hits with four strikeouts and four walks.

CSU (6-3) will play Tusculum at 12:30 p.m. and Lincoln Memorial at 2:30 p.m. Sunday in the third day of the Cougar Classic.
