Georgia Tech rallies in seventh inning to defeat Old Dominion 6-5

ATLANTA -- Georgia Tech opened its 2014 season Friday with a seventh-inning rally to defeat Old Dominion 6-5 in the Battle of Midtown at Russ Chandler Stadium.

Old Dominion (0-1) took a 3-0 lead before the Jackets (1-0) tied it in the bottom of the second inning. Georgia Tech took a 4-3 lead in the bottom of the fifth inning only to see Old Dominion jump back on top 5-4 with two runs in the top of the sixth.

Elliot Barzilli, who also homered in the game, walked to lead off Tech's seventh inning. Daniel Spingola tripled to right to score Barzilli. Thomas Smith later singled to right to score Spingola.

Dusty Issacs (1-0) gave up one hit in 3.1 innings of relief to pick up the win. Jonathan King went four innings as the starter.

Dean Ali (0-1) took the loss in relief for Old Dominion.

The Battle of Midtown continues Saturday with Old Dominion playing VCU at noon and Georgia Tech taking on Radford at 4 p.m.

On Sunday, Radford plays Old Dominion at 10 a.m. and Tech plays VCU at 2 p.m.
