A domestic dispute early Saturday at a Cusseta Road apartment has left a man dead and his girlfriend charged with murder, Columbus police said.

Tyree Jevontae Burtin, 38, was pronounced dead of a stab wound to the chest at 11:47 a.m. in the intensive care unit at Midtown Medical Center, Muscogee County Deputy Coroner Charles Newton said. Burtin was transported to the hospital at 1:40 a.m. from 4100 Cusseta Road.

Police Lt. John McMichael said Niketa Garnette Brooks, 39, has been charged with murder and possession of a knife during the commission of a crime. She is being held in the Muscogee County Jail for a Monday hearing in Columbus Recorder's Court.

Police were called to the apartment at 1:10 a.m.

"They found him stabbed in the chest," McMichael said.

After the victim died just after noon, the coroner called investigators.

The victim and Brooks lived in the apartment on Cusseta Road. Investigators believe no one else was in

volved in the stabbing.

"It's apparently the result of some kind of domestic situation between them," McMichael said.

Burtin is the third homicide victim in 2014. Troy Saunders, 39, of Fort Mitchell, Ala., was fatally shot in the neck during a robbery attempt on Jan. 24 outside the Super 8 Motel on Warm Springs Road. Marvine Bailey, 47, was fatally shot on Jan. 25 during a drive-by shooting on Forsyth Street.

Four suspects have been charged in Saunders' death, but Bailey's shooting remains under investigation.
