Lady Cougars beat GRU Augusta 75-62 in overtime

AUGUSTA, Ga. -- The Columbus State Lady Cougars picked up their 11th conference win by defeating GRU Augusta 75-62 Sunday. Picking up the victory, however, was not easy.

GRU Augusta outscored CSU 34-27 in the first half, but the Lady Cougars battled back to tie the game at 62-62 by the end of regulation.

In the end an overtime period was needed to decide the winner, and Columbus State prevented Augusta from scoring in extra time to pick up the win.

Augusta had a 14-9 lead after the first 10 minutes of play. Augusta fought to a 10-point advantage with 2:02 showing on the clock in the first, but a 3-pointer by Tae Smith, a jumper by Asha Alexander and free throws by Alexander and Carrie Washington helped narrow the gap to seven at the break.

Within the first three minutes of the second half CSU had tied the game up at 36-36. With 9:11 remaining Columbus State took a 53-46 lead, but GRU Augusta battled back to tie the game yet again at 53-53. From there the two teams remained within three points of each other through the end of regulation.

In the overtime period it was all Columbus State, which ended the contest on a 13-0 run.

Alexander led CSU with 20 points in the game. Smith had 18 points, and Washington led the team with 15 rebounds and had eight points.

Britteny Tatum tallied seven points and Chatil Bradford totaled five.

The Lady Cougars (16-5, 11-4 Peach Belt Conference) will travel to play Montevallo Wednesday at 6:30 p.m.
