AUBURN, Ala. Five members of Auburns support staff have departed in the last month.
The possibility exists that some of those positions may not get filled. However, Gus Malzahn said Tuesday that one positive is the Tigers have a little flexibility to work with.
I don't know at this point if I'll fill them all, but I'm very encouraged and happy for the guys that moved on, he said. They did a wonderful job here, helped us get to the national championship game. They're all very good people and they're very good coaches, so we wish them nothing but the best.
Offensive analyst Chip Lindsey became the co-offensive coordinator at Southern Miss, high school relations director Al Pogue landed a job as Troy's cornerbacks coach and analyst (and former Carver coach) Dell McGee joined Georgia Southern's staff as the running backs coach.
Last week, Auburn lost two support staffers on consecutive days. Defensive analyst Brandon Hall left to take over the co-defensive coordinator position at Jacksonville State. Assistant director of player development Wes Murphy departed the next day to take on the role of offensive line coach and recruiting coordinator at Virginia Union.
All five had previous experience as high school coaches. While Malzahn didnt guarantee he would once again dip into the high school ranks, he said he would continue to give them breaks whenever he can.
I think it's very important the fact that I've been a high school and I got this opportunity to try to give other people more opportunities, he said. Hopefully that'll be a trend in the future.
