Columbus State routs GRU Augusta 11-2

AUGUSTA, Ga. -- The Columbus State Cougars cruised to a 11-2 win over GRU Augusta Friday.

Brendan Collins got things started for CSU when he reached home on a throwing error in the first inning.

Blaine Miller and Collins both hit RBI singles in the second inning to put the Cougars up 3-0.

Jackson Oliver padded CSU's lead with a two-RBI single in the fourth, but GRU Augusta scored two runs of its own in the inning to narow the gap to 5-2.

Dustin Averett hit a two-run shot over the left center wall in the fifth to put CSU up 7-2.

Columbus State scored the final runs of the contest in the seventh. Mike McClellan was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to bring a run in, and Matt Nettles hit a two-RBI single to right field field followed by an RBI single to left field by Collins.

Collins went 3-6 with two RBIs on the day, Averett went 2-3 with two RBIs, Nettles went 1-3 with two runs batted in and Oliver went 1-4 with two RBIs for CSU.

Mike McGinnity (1-0) picked up the win. He threw for eight innings and gave up two runs on seven hits with two strikeouts and a walk.

Columbus State (7-6, 3-1 Peach Belt Conference) will play in a doubleheader at GRU Augusta starting today at 1:30 p.m. to finish the series.
