AUGUSTA, Ga. -- The Columbus State baseball team defeated GRU Augusta 9-1 in the early game of a doubleheader and 8-1 in the nightcap Saturday.
CSU won the first game in the series 11-2 Friday.
In Game 1 CSU took a 2-0 lead in the top of the second after Dustin Averett and Mike McClellan both hit RBI doubles.
McClellan brought in another un in the third, and Blaine Miller scored on a throwing error followed by an RBI single by Brendan Collins in the fourth.
The Cougars added another run in the seventh on an error before scorinf three runs in the eighth when Jackson Oliver walked with the bases loaded and Jimmy Obermark hit a two-run single to left field. Obermark went 3-4 with two RBIs in the game.
Caden Ferguson (1-1) picked up the win. He threw for seven innings and gave up no runs on three hits with seven strikeouts and four walks.
In Game 2 got out to an early 2-0 lead in the first inning. Augusta scored a single run in the second inning to narrow the gap to 2-1, but CSU put together three runs in the top of the fifth thanks to an RBI double by Oliver, an RBI single by Averett and an RBI single by McClellan.
The Cougars scored two insurance runs in the seventh and one in the eighth to make the final score.
Bryan Headley (3-1) notched the win for Columbus State. He pitched five innings and gave up one run on three hits with three strikeouts and four walks.
CSU (9-6, 5-1 Peach Belt Conference) will host Shorter Tuesday at 4 p.m.
