Tampa, FL (SportsNetwork.com) - J.R. Murphy went 2-for-2 with an RBI and a run scored, as the New York Yankees opened their spring training slate with an 8-3 win over the Florida State Seminoles and Heisman Trophy winner Jameis Winston.
After hitting .235 in 41 games and making 17 relief appearances for the Seminoles' baseball squad last year, Winston quarterbacked Florida State's football team to a perfect 14-0 season, culminating in a victory in the National Championship in January.
The 20-year-old two-sport athlete came into Tuesday's tilt 1-for-1 with a run scored in two games for FSU this season, but went 0-for-2 with a strikeout in the setback. Winston did not pitch against the Yankees, despite coming in with one save and three strikeouts in four scoreless innings of one-hit ball over three appearances this year.
Vidal Nuno, Brian Gordon and Bryan Mitchell each spun two scoreless innings for the Yankees, who received one RBI from six different players, including a solo homer from Ramon Flores.
John Sansone drove in all three runs for the Seminoles, while Peter Miller was tagged with the loss after giving up a run on two hits in an inning of work.
