After stashing his gun in a container full of children's toys, a Columbus man accused of repeatedly threatening his girlfriend's life jumped off an apartment balcony to avoid police, according to court testimony.

Officers say Brandon King, 28, repeatedly punched his 22-year-old girlfriend in the face and threatened her with a Smith & Wesson handgun before police arrived at the 3400 block Eighth Avenue apartment on Feb 13.

King faced two counts of battery with physical harm, simple battery, obstructing an officer and criminal trespass during a Wednesday morning Recorder's Court hearing. He also faced two counts of third-degree cruelty to children, one count of second degree cruelty to children, terroristic threats, reckless conduct and possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime charges.

February's assault was not the first time King is accused of threatening the victim's life.

On Jan. 16, police say King held the victim down and punched her repeatedly while she was staying at the Colony Inn on the 4300 block of Victory Drive. At one point, King showed the victim a gun and threatened to kill her.

Both assaults occurred in front of the victim's children, one of whom was 8 months old at the time, police said. When the January assault woke that child, he stood up and started crying. In response, King allegedly bashed the child's head with a lamp.

Judge Michael Cielinski set King's bond at $29,500. He also has been ordered to pay $960 or be detained in Muscogee County Jail for 30 days after he violated a probation set in relation to a possession of marijuana charge.
