Cougars win close game with Clayton State 63-57

MORROW, Ga. -- Columbus State finished the regular season with a 63-57 win over Clayton State Saturday. The win puts CSU at 14-12 on the season and 8-11 in the Peach Belt Conference.

The two teams were neck and neck in the early stages of the game.

The score was knotted at 13-13 at the 11:56 mark of the first half, but Clayton State went on a short run to take a 18-13 advantage two minutes later.

The Cougars battled back to a 25-25 tie after Kenney Funderburk hit a jump shot with 6 minutes left in the half.

The two teams were tied three more times by the end of the half, and Columbus State and Clayton State went into the break even at 31-31.

Clayton State managed a 36-31 advantage to start the second half, but a layup by DeAngelo Kirkland tied the game once again, this time at 38-38 with 16 minutes left to play.

From there the two teams traded the lead four times before Columbus State hit nine free throws down the stretch to take the win.

BJ Battle led CSU with 15 points. Shane Heyward and Kirkland both had double-doubles for the Cougars in the game.

Heyward had 13 points and 14 rebounds, and Kirkland tallied 11 points and a team-high 18 rebounds.

Funderburk totaled 11 points, and Jahmad Saleem had six points.

Columbus State will will enter the PBC tournament as the No. 4 seed from the West division.

The Cougars will play the No. 1 seed from the East division, USC Aiken, Friday at 7 p.m. in the Lumpkin Center.
