Averett homers to lead CSU to 3-2 win over Armstrong Atlantic


Dustin Averett homered in the bottom of the eighth inning to break a 2-2 tie Saturday and Columbus State held on for a 3-2 win over Armstrong Atlantic State University.

Columbus State (11-6, 6-1 Peach Belt Conference) took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the third inning when Matt Nettles scored on a trapped a fly ball in right field. Armstrong (9-4, 5-2 PBC) took a 2-1 lead in the fourth inning before CSU tied the game in the seventh inning. It was Nettles scoring from third on a ground out by Jackson Oliver.

Averett and Nettles each had three hits for the Cougars.

Closer Trey Watson (2-0) picked up the win.

CSU and Armstrong play a doubleheader today beginning at 1 p.m. at Ragsdale Field.
