Cougars split with Armstrong Atlantic

The Columbus State Cougars split with Armstrong Atlantic Sunday. The Cougars won Game 1 9-4 but fell in the nightcap 8-7 in 10 innings. CSU won the series 2-1.

In Game 1 Armstrong Atlantic took a big 4-0 lead in the top of the fourth, but CSU scored one run in the bottom of the inning on a Jackson Oliver home run and five in the fifth inning. Tim Massengale hit a solo shot to right field followed by a two -RBI triple by Oliver. Blake Edwards hit an RBI single, and Taylor Cato brought in a run on a sacrifice fly.

Solo home runs by Carson Bowers and Jimmy Obermark and an RBI triple by Massengale rounded out the scoring for the Cougars.

Caden Ferguson (2-1) picked up the win. He threw for eighth innings and gave up four runs on five hits with 11 strikeouts and one walk.

In Game 2 Armstrong Atlantic took a 5-0 lead in the top of the first. Columbus State worked to whittle the lead down over the next eight innings and eventually tied the contest at 5-5.

Armstrong Atlantic scored three runs in the 10th, and Columbus State only managed two in the bottom of the inning.

Brendan Collins went 2-5 with three RBIs in the game for CSU. Both hits were home runs.

Trey Watson (2-1) absorbed the loss. He pitched 1 1-3 innings and gave up three runs on two hits with one strikeout and one walk.

Columbus State (12-7, 7-2) will host Tuskegee Tuesday at 4 p.m.
