UPDATE: Olympian Shannon Szabados joining Cottonmouths

Posted by KATHY GIERER on March 7, 2014

Olympic gold medal winner Shannon Szabados will sign with the Columbus Cottonmouths and join the team next week, coach and general manager Jerome Bechard said Friday afternoon.

She will arrive in Columbus on Wednesday and will dress for her first game on Thursday.

Szabados will take her place in SPHL history if she steps between the pipes at the Columbus Civic Center. Shannon would become the first female player in league history and one of few women to ever play pro hockey.

Szabados posted this on her Twitter account Friday afternoon.

She'll rejoin former juniors teammates and pals Andy Willigar, Jordan Draper and Kyle Johnson.
