Opelika, Ala., officer placed on leave in I-85 shooting

An officer with the Opelika Police Department has been placed on administrative leave with pay after an officer involved shooting on Interstate 85 Thursday, authorities said today.

Opelika Police Chief John McEachern III identified the officer as Phillip Hancock who was involved in the incident at 7:12 p.m. CST. Hancock is on leave pending the outcome of a continuing investigation by the Alabama Bureau of Investigation.

The officer was not injured in the incident. No information was released on the other person involved in the incident.

Police Capt. Bruce DeLong said the shooting occurred during a traffic stop on the interstate but offered no other details on the shooting.

“That is where we stand right now,” DeLong said. “That is about all I can release right now.”
