Shaw's Academic Decathlon team named Rookie of the Year

Special to the Ledger-EnquirerShaw's Academic Decathlon team named Rookie of the YearShaw High School's Academic Decathlon team recently competed in the State Academic Decathlon Competition and won three individual medals and won Rookie of the Year as they were the highest scoring team making their first appearance at state competition. The winning team members are, from left, Austin Nichols, Briana Tucker, Mathieu Tessier, Taylor Cerrato, Latara Reid, Jacobe Love, Madeleine Drew, Coach Natasha Torres, Kameron Leatherwood and Captain Anderson Peguero II. The Academic Decathlon is a rigorous and exciting competition club for students who wish to showcase their academic knowledge. Students will study a curriculum and participate in weekly games and study activities that will prepare them for competition. The competition is comprised of 11 events in the following categories: seven multiple choice exams in various subjects of Art, Economics, Language and Literature, Mathematics, Music, Science and Social Science and a Super Quiz Oral Relay; a written essay; a prepared and an impromptu speech, and an interview. The team is coached by Shaw's Media Specialist, Natasha Torres.
