Lady Cougars sweep Francis Marion in doubleheader


The Columbus State Lady Cougars opened up Peach Belt Conference play with a sweep of Francis Marion in a doubleheader Friday. Columbus State won Game 1 7-6 and the nightcap 6-3.

Francis Marion managed five runs in the third inning of Game 1, but home runs by Suzanne Carney, Morgan Knight, Kristen Carr, Lindsey DeFee and Nina Rubio helped put CSU back on top.

In Game 2 the Lady Cougars scored two runs in each of the first, fifth and sixth innings to pick up the win.

DeFee (2-1) and Abby Green (4-0) were the winning pitchers for CSU.

Columbus State (19-8, 2-0) will host UNC Pembroke for a doubleheader beginning Saturday at 1 p.m.
