Blake Edwards' grand slam helps Cougars roll past Montevallo


Blake Edwards hit a grand slam for Columbus State as the Cougars rolled past Montevallo 12-1 Friday at home in the first leg of a three-game series.

CSU scored three runs in the fifth inning and seven runs in the eighth to help put the game out of reach.

Edwards was 1-for-5 with four RBIs, Dustin Averett was 2-for-4 with three RBIs and Carson Bowers, Matt Nettles, Jackson Oliver and Brendan Collins each had one RBI for CSU.

Mike McGinnity pitched 7 1-3 innings and gave up one run on six hits with three strikeouts and no walks.

Columbus State (19-7, 8-2) was scheduled to play Game 3 of its home series against Montevallo (15-8, 7-5) on Sunday. Instead, that game will become part of a doubleheader on Saturday, starting at 1 p.m. at Ragsdale Field.
