TUSCALOOSA, Ala. -- With the start of spring practice comes the annual roster changes.

Along with the players who leave early for the NFL and the ones who graduate and run out of eligibility are the players who choose to go elsewhere or make the decision to not continue their playing career.

So when Alabama opened practice on Saturday, there was a bit of spring cleaning for Crimson Tide coach Nick Saban to take care of as three expected returners from last year's team weren't listed on the spring roster.

The biggest domino to fall was center Chad Lindsay.

A source close to the situation confirmed to the Anniston Star that Lindsay will indeed transfer to another school. Since he has graduated, Lindsay will be eligible to play immediately. Lindsay played eight games and made four starts in 2013, filling in for starter Ryan Kelly when he went down with knee injuries.

Tight end Harrison Jones is also no longer with the team. Like Lindsay, Jones has already graduated and would be eligible to play immediately, but there is no indication that he will. Jones saw time in 11 games last season.

"We certainly appreciate the great job that they did when they were involved in the program and wish them well," Saban said. "They'll always be a part of what we've done here, and we certainly appreciate their efforts and the contributions that they've had in the success of the program."

Walk-on safety Jai Miller was also not on the roster, but his absence may not be a permanent one.

Miller, who joined the Tide after 10 years of playing professional baseball, saw action in five games last season.

Saban said Miller "decided to focus on academics and not come back and be a part of the team, at least for right now."

Along with the departures are the annual position changes. Last season, Alabama moved players to tight end and cornerback. This spring, the Tide is looking for help at safety.

ArDarius Stewart, who redshirted as a slot receiver last year, opened practice working with defensive coordinator Kirby Smart and the safety group.

Other players who've been through the experiment of going from offense to defensive back include former running back Dee Hart and wide receivers Christion Jones and Cyrus Jones. Cyrus Jones is the only one who stuck at the position.

Losing Miller at safety along with the fact that the Tide could lose three players at the position after this season (Landon Collins, Nick Perry, Jarrick Williams), Stewart could fit into the team's long-term plans at the position.

A member of the Tide's 2013 recruiting class, Stewart was a consensus four-star athlete coming out of Fultondale (Ala.). Along with putting up big offensive numbers, Stewart had 55 tackles with two interceptions as a senior.

Saban said the team will spend "two or three days looking at him as a defensive back" and called the move "very experimental."

"We're just trying to sort of find out whether he could play safety or not," Saban said. "He's not been moved to defensive back. This is a temporary experiment, could you do it if we needed you to type of circumstance."
