Cougars win series with Montevallo 2-1


The Columbus State Cougars defeated Montevallo 2-1 in a three-game series. CSU fell in Game 1 of a doubleheader 10-4 Saturday before winning the nightcap 7-6 on a walk-off RBI single by Dustin Averett. The Cougars won the first game of the series 12-1 Friday.

In Game 1 Saturday Montevallo scored a steady stream of runs late to put the game out of reach.

Brendan Collins and Blake Edwards had one RBI each in the game for Columbus State. Caden Ferguson (3-2) picked up the loss. He pitched five innings and gave up two runs on six hits with six strikeouts and one walk.

In Game 2 Montevallo had a 5-2 lead going into the bottom of the seventh inning. Jackson Oliver hit a sacrifice fly for an RBI in the seventh and Edwards reached home on a wild pitch in the eighth for Columbus State.

Montevallo added a run in the eighth as well, putting the Cougars down 6-4 going into the ninth. Oliver hit a 2-run double to set up Averett's walk-off single to win the game.

Oliver went 3-for-4 with three RBIs in the game. Trey Watson (3-1) picked up the win. He pitched two innings and gave up one run on one hit with two strikeouts and two walks.

Columbus State (20-8, 9-3) will play at Shorter Wednesday at 3 p.m.
