High school roundup: Holtzclaw, York earn all-state first-team honors

Nine local players -- seven from Glenwood -- were named to the Alabama Sportswriters Association all-state team, it was announced Sunday.

Glenwood's Anthony Holtzclaw and Tamara York made the AISA first-team.

Holtzclaw, a 6-foot-3 senior guard, averaged 18 points, five rebounds, five assists and four steals per game in leading the Gators to a 29-3 record and an AISA Class AAA state runner-up finish.

Teammates Alex Hicks and Tanner Thomason made the second team and honorable mention, respectively.

Hicks, a 6-8 senior forward, averaged 15 points, eight rebounds, four assists and four blocks.

Thomason, a 6-9 senior forward, averaged 10 points, eight rebounds, two assists and five blocks.

York, a 6-foot senior center, averaged 12.8 points, 10.2 rebounds, 2.3 steals and 6.1 blocks in leading the Lady Gators to a 26-1 record and the AISA Class AAA state title.

Teammate Elizabeth Perdue, a 5-7 junior, made the second team after averaging 14.8 points, 3.4 steals and 2.1 assists.

Tamera McClain and Aaliyah Bell made honorable mention. Bell, a 5-4 junior guard, averaged 6.1 points, 6.3 assists and 2.4 steals.

A pair of public school players made honorable mention.

Central's Anthony Moore, a 6-4 junior guard, made it in Class 6A.

Russell County Carl Johnson III, a 6-4 senior guard, made it in Class 5A.

NORTHSIDE SETS RECORDS

DOUGLASVILLE, Ga. -- The Northside girls broke three school records as they finished second in the Jaguar Relays at New Manchester High on Saturday.

The Patriots finished seventh in the boys meet.

Chelsea Nix broke the school record in both the 100- and 300-meter hurdles. The distance medley team -- Brealle Henry, Tia Gray, Cassie Ray and Morgan Miller, also broke a school record.

The 4x200 relay team -- Destiny McClendon, Erin Nix, Aaliya Meyers and Karaysha White -- finished first. The boys 4x800 relay team -- Abraham Perez, Tyler Askew, Austin Kid and Noah Churchwell -- also broke a school record.

CENTRAL SWEEPS COACHO

The Central boys and girls track teams won team titles in the Coacho.

The Red Devils finished with 161 points, followed by Smiths Station with 112.5.

The Lady Red Devils won with 175 points, while Shaw was second with 123.

Boys winners included Eddie Stafford (Spencer, 1600), Hakeem Mustafaa (Shaw, 3200), Tyree Reed (Central, 110H, 300H), Central 4x100 (Eric Durham, Swanagan Williams, Karon Delince, Reed), Central 4x400 (Durham, Williams, Quentavious Dixon, Reed), Central 4x800 (Quentavious Dixon, Tyrone Davis, Quincy Dixon, Xavier Lewis), Antonio Sarluca (Shaw, HJ), Caleb Smith (Russell County, LJ), Durham (Central, TJ), Kenneth Thomas (Central, SP, javelin), Quazon Smith (Carver, discus).
