Columbus State scores twice in the seventh inning to defeat Shorter 4-2

ROME Ga, -- Columbus State broke a 2-2 tie with two runs in the top the seventh inning Wednesday and went on to a take 4-2 win over Shorter.

Columbus State (21-8, 9-3 Peach Belt) and Shorter (7-18) each scored single runs in the second and fifth innings.

Mike McClellan walked to lead off the seventh. Tim Massengale singled and Carson Bowers reached on an error to load the bases.

Shorter pitcher Brodie Orr (0-3) then hit Brendan Collins to drive in the go-ahead run. Jackson Oliver next lifted a sacrifice to right field to score Massengale and give CSU an insurance run.

Shawn Thomas (3-0) worked 1 2-3 scoreless innings for the Cougars to pick up the win. He struck out three. Taylor Cato retired all three batters he faced in the ninth inning and got a save.

Blake Edwards and Massengale each had two hits for the Cougars. Collins drove in two runs.

Columbus State hosts a three-game conference series with Francis Marion beginning at 7 p.m. Friday. A doubleheader begins at 2 p.m. Saturday.
