CVCC routs Wallace State-Selma 11-1 behind Rentz, Sperry

Dalton Rentz pitched a complete game and Cam Sperry went 2-for-3 with four RBIs for Chattahoochee Valley Community College to lead the Pirates to an 11-1 rout of Wallace State-Selma in eight innings Friday.

Wallace State-Selma jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the second, but a 2-run double from Sperry followed by an RBI by Drew Lingo put CVCC on top in the fourth.

“Rentz took control from that point on,” CVCC coach Adam Thomas said. “He gives us a chance to win every time he steps on the mound.”

The Pirates scored five runs in the seventh and added three more insurance runs in the eighth to put the game well out of reach.

Rentz (6-1) gave up one run on four hits with six strikeouts and one walk in his eight innings of work.

John Holland went 4-for-4 with a stolen base, and Jared Martin went 2-for-3 with a run batted in.

CVCC (21-7, 5-2) will host Wallace State-Selma for a doubleheader beginning Saturday at 1 p.m. to complete the three-game series.
