Columbus State scores 27 runs in doubleheader rout of Francis Marion


Columbus State scored 27 runs, pounded out 35 hits, including three home runs, five doubles and a triple, in a doubleheader rout of Francis Marion on Saturday afternoon at Ragsdale Field.

The Cougars finished the Peach Belt Conference series sweep with 14-5 and 13-6 wins. CSU (24-8, 12-3) has now won five straight.

Catcher Dustin Averett led the Cougars with a homer and six RBIs as he went 3-for-9 in the twinbill with three runs scored. Tim Massengale didn't start either game but still managed to go 2-for-2 with a homer and five RBIs.

Jackson Oliver went 6-for-9 with two RBIs and two runs scored. Mike McClellan had CSU's other homer. He finished the day, going 3-for-7 with three RBIs and three runs scored.

Blake Edwards went 5-for-9 with an RBI and four runs scored. Brendan Collins went 4-for-10 with three RBIs and four runs scored. Carson Bowers also had three hits.

Caden Ferguson (4-2) won Game 1 as he allowed five runs in 6 2-3 innings. Bryan Headley (5-1) won Game 2 as he gave up three runs on six innings.

CSU plays at West Florida at 7 p.m. Tuesday.
