A man who stole four boxes of cologne is in jail after he attempted to use a box cutter to assault the victims, according to a Columbus police report.

Demetrius Ming, 40, was arrested on the scene and charged with aggravated assault, theft by shoplifting and obstruction.

Ming is accused of stealing four bottles of cologne — one Lacoste ($46.97), one Jovan ($23), one Gucci ($59.97) and one Dolce & Gobbana ($44.97) — from the Walmart at 4701 Buena Vista Road.

The reporting officer said Ming fled the Walmart on foot but not before he gave back one bottle of cologne. When he continued his attempt to flee the Walmart, two lost prevention officers attempted to detain the suspect, according to the report.

That's when Ming pushed the victims, pulled out a box cutter out of his right jacket pocket and swung the knife at a victim, missing by just "a few inches," the victims reported.

When police arrived on scene, Ming was in the Victory Beauty Supply Store, 4686 Buena Vista Road, according to the report. After additional force arrived, officers searched the store and called out for Ming, but he reportedly didn't respond. He later told police he fell asleep on the bottom of a shelf.

Officers reported they found the box cutter in Ming's pocket when he was arrested.
