You're the director for the Sexual Assault Support Center, which services all six counties in the Chattahoochee Judicial District. What does your work entail?
The center provides crisis intervention and support for victims of sexual assault and their loved ones who are similarly affected. We have a 24-hour crisis hotline and trained volunteer advocates who provide support for medical and court accompaniment. A great deal of time is also spent training and educating the community about sexual assault and the services that are available to victims and their family members.
What do you know about sexual assault that you wish everyone knew?
I wish everyone knew
the "real" impact sexual assault has on victims, families, businesses and communities. Statistics don't even come close to the actual number of people in our lives who have been victimized. They are our family members, our friends, people we see at church and at work, spouses, children they are all around us and sometimes we just are not aware of it. How did having Miss Patsy from Miss Patsy's Playhouse as a mother influence your adult life and professional work?
I have to say it was "pretty cool" growing up with Miss Patsy! Of course, to me she was "my mom" and certainly the biggest influence in my life. She taught me early on that we are responsible for contributing to this world, for giving back and for making a difference. I've tried to do that with both my personal and professional life. How has working as Sexual Assault Support Center director influenced your approach to parenting?
Communication and education is a major part of my job as director of the center; Communication and education is a major part of my job as a parent! I am very passionate about both aspects of my life. Thank goodness, we are a very communicative family! What is the best kept secret in the Chattahoochee Valley? It's really not a secret, but I think Flat Rock Park is one of the great gems of Columbus that many people are not aware of. The children and I love to visit the park, walk the trails, sit in the sunshine and walk the dog there. It's a nice place to unwind and relax.
